What Does a GFCI Do? Understanding One of Your Home's Most Important Safety Devices

When most homeowners think about electrical safety, they think about circuit breakers. But there's another device working quietly in many homes that helps protect people from one of the greatest electrical hazards—electric shock.
It's called a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter, or GFCI.
Although you've probably seen one in your bathroom or kitchen, many people don't know what it actually does or why it's so important.
What Is a GFCI?
A GFCI is a safety device designed to help protect people from electric shock.
It constantly monitors the electricity flowing through a circuit. Under normal conditions, the amount of electricity leaving on the hot wire should be the same amount returning on the neutral wire.
If even a small amount of electricity begins flowing somewhere it shouldn't—such as through water or through a person—the GFCI detects the difference and shuts off the power in a fraction of a second.
That quick response can greatly reduce the risk of serious electrical injury.
GFCI Receptacle vs. GFCI Breaker
Many people recognize a GFCI by the TEST and RESET buttons found on an electrical receptacle.
However, newer homes are increasingly using GFCI circuit breakers instead.
GFCI Receptacle
A GFCI receptacle provides protection at the outlet and may also protect additional outlets connected downstream on the same circuit.
These are the outlets most homeowners recognize because they include the familiar TEST and RESET buttons.
GFCI Breaker
Instead of placing the protection at an outlet, a GFCI breaker provides protection for the entire electrical circuit from the home's electrical panel.
This means you may not see TEST and RESET buttons on the receptacles because the protection is located at the breaker panel.
Different devices—same important job.
Where Is GFCI Protection Commonly Required?
GFCI protection is commonly found in areas where electricity and moisture are more likely to come into contact, including:
Bathrooms
Kitchen countertop receptacles
Garages
Laundry areas
Unfinished basements
Crawl spaces
Exterior receptacles
Other wet or damp locations
Depending on when a home was built or updated, GFCI protection may be provided by receptacles, breakers, or a combination of both.
